I inherited this truck from my dad. It has 135k miles on it and most of them are probably highway miles. The engine has decent power for what it is. However, when cruising on interstate at 75MPH the truck loses speed quickly on inclines as low as 10 to 15 degrees. It will lose 5MPH and then kick in the passing gear to speed up. I recently replaced all the plugs with NGK Iridiums which is what came in the truck. This truck is an ST model with short wheel base and standard cab. It's about as stripped down as you can get in a vehicle.

I just wish I knew if there was something I could do to get a bit more power out of the engine to keep it from having to downshift so much. The strip of highway I drive every day is very hilly. Tony you may have driven the same patch of road, I-20 from Shreveport to Monroe...???

Should have said that I have the 42RLE transmission also. I was told I have the same setup as the Jeep Liberty.

Goddamn, you are just having all kinds of automotive issues aren't you... lmao.

This sounds more like an OD issue and less like an engine issue. Yes, the engine is going to be a little weaker than when it was new, but it shouldn't be that weak. If your oil looks good, if you are not getting any blow by when you remove the oil fill cap while it's running and if it is not smoking, then it is likely not the engine.

More than likely it is the transmission detecting that you are going up hill and instead of putting the engine under mass strain in OD, it kicks down to 3rd so that the engine doesn't have to work as hard.

Also if this is on cruise, it will only add so much fuel before kicking down which once the TPS (or detent cable if it is older, but I don't think they had that in 08) detects a certain number on the throttle percentage, it will kick down and/or release the lockup on the converter.

Next time you are about to drive that stretch again, manually put it in 3rd before getting to the hill (like a mile or so back) and then see what it does. I will almost bet it will just keep the gear and not have to downshift.

And yes, I know exactly the road you are talking about, unfortunately... lmao

Sorry have been busy. I guess the engine is doing all it can. I just wish it had a V8.

I just wanted to make sure that didn't come across as something different that I meant. This forum is more open IMO so I'm going to treat it like that.

And yea, especially if you are towing.
